Don’t Dismiss the Significance of Online Directories
Most people are confident with using search engines nowadays, as they allow us to locate websites rather rapidly. This is fundamental, however search engine results aren’t moderated by humans, but by an algorithmic rule. So why would that be noteworthy? Imagine you’re searching for a hotel in Manchester as an example. You would type these keywords into Bing (for example), then a list of results would appear. How can one know if these results are reliable if they haven’t been been vetted by a human editor? Here’s how: search engines employ human-administered online directories as a basic filter.
Directories still play a significant part on the web, and the greatest directories are inevitably edited by humans. A person may realise that (e.g.) : “that hotel has been awarded a michelin star, that’s a very secure signal”. A renowned directory receives a number of submissions daily. An administrator will investigate these submissions, and if the official is content that the level of the submission is of a set standard, it is included in to the website directory. And this is why search engines still love internet directories. Both the Yahoo! directory and dmoz.org are looked up by search engines as filters to determine the trustworthiness of a website – whether it’s listed in these directories or not, since they’re edited by humans and have strict rules-for-entry.
So do not understate the significance of online directories now that most people use search engines to find websites. A human-edited directory can be an important measuring device as to how trustworthy a website is. If you own a website, try and get your site included in a niche directory, like a builders directory, a motel directory, or a yoga directory.
