Paralegal Programs – Picking the Right College
Clearly, the American Bar Association (ABA) has played a huge direct role in the development of the paralegal profession over its short history but it’s also played a cursory role, because most of the major paralegal professional organizations, in the land of opportunity, had their roots in the ABA. One influential paralegal organization is the American Association for Paralegal Education, an organization whose primary focus is that of helping paralegal schools and their instructors provide the most complete and highest quality paralegal training instruction possible. As a result, AAfPE has become the academic development resource for the field.
Critical aspects to remember when looking into the quality of a paralegal program:
1. Paralegal schools should educate students with the primary objective being to development the entire student. This needs to be done by teaching usable, sensible workforce skills alongside a solid core of legal theory. The curriculum should encompass topics like torts and legal contracts, legal writing and contracts, litigation and legal research. Organizational and communication skills must be developed in addition to a student’s capacity to think critically and apply the legal theory into real world situations. A high quality paralegal programs school will also provide the opportunity to learn through programs like an internship or clinical experience.
2. Who are players behind the scenes? Who put the paralegal curriculum together and who is teaching it? Do the staff and the paralegal schools program director have top notch credentials? The paralegal teaching staff should have field experience in the subject they are teaching be considered an “expert” on that subject. The curriculum director should have an advanced degree in a related field at worst but preferably they have a law degree or a bunch of paralegal work experience and an advanced paralegal degree.
3. An increasing number of higher educational colleges and universities are now making paralegal courses and/or entire paralegal degree programs available online via the internet. Potential students need to find out what type of delivery system will be used and how much training will be provided in using the system whether it’s all web-based, video based or a combination of the two. Another key factor for one must ask themselves is if they are properly suited for online learning because it takes a strong level of commitment and discipline.
Obviously, seeking a paralegal career is not for just anyone but it is for those that welcome research, have top notch writing and organizational skills and can work under a deadline and for that possess those skills this is an exciting and expanding field that offers financial rewards and professional fulfillment.
